Microsoft DOS Utilities (ver 6.22) Abandonware These are assorted DOS utilities from Microsoft. Most came from the last stand-alone Microsoft DOS suite, version 6.22. None of these utilities are required by the Disk Operating System! Please note that these utilities are -NOT- long file name aware. To boot your system, you can use my customized MSDOS 6.22 boot diskette creation program to make a bootable 1.44mb DOS startup diskette. ===== Note: Although for completeness I have included "IO.SYS" and "MSDOS.SYS" in this utility package (as well as "command.com"), you can -not- boot a computer into DOS using these files unless they are specially placed on your bootup disk. For details, see the "About.txt" file elswhere on this server under the entry called -> "MSDOS 6.22 BootDiskette {required}". +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Microsoft DOS Utilities (ver 3.30) Abandonware These are DOS utilities that shipped with Microsoft DOS 3.30. None of these utilities are required by the Disk Operating System (Command.com can even be substituted by some other command processor)! Please note that these utilities are -NOT- long file name aware. To boot your system, you can use the MSDOS 3.30 boot diskette creation program to make a bootable 720k DOS startup diskette. Please note that the utilities LINK.EXE, RECOVER.COM, and SELECT.COM did -not- ship with MS-DOS 6.22. You can still use them under MS-DOS 6.22, but you will have to use SETVER.EXE utility to make them work. "Link.exe" is a programming tool that will combine compiled programs with an .OBJ extension and produce an .EXE executable file. Because some programming software often makes small changes to the code it produces that differs from what MS-DOS Link expects, you should always use the Link utility that comes with your programming software instead. These compatibility issues were why this utility was later removed from MS-DOS. "Recover.com" is a utility that attempts to recover data from bad sectors on a disk. In MS-DOS 6.22 it has been replaced by the SCANDISK utility. "Select.com" is a utility that formats a disk, and then transfers the MS-DOS 3.30 Code Page files (plus Config.sys and Autoexec.bat) onto the disk. Files must be in default locations or they will fail to copy (this is why it was removed in MS-DOS 6.22, in favor of manual copying). ----- The utilities included are: ANSI.SYS ANSI driver APPEND.EXE Assigns paths for accessing data files ASSIGN.COM Re-assigns logical drive letter designations ATTRIB.EXE Changes file attributes BACKUP.COM Copies files to a 'backup' archive CHKDSK.COM Finds file system errors COMMAND.COM A command interperetor COMP.COM Verifies if two files have identical content DEBUG.COM A debugger DISKCOMP.COM Verifies if two floppy disks are clones DISKCOPY.COM Clones a floppy disk DISPLAY.SYS Sets video code page information DRIVER.SYS Supports installing more physical floppy drives EDLIN.COM Primitive word processor EXE2BIN.EXE Extracts EXE file as a Memory Image (BIN file) FASTOPEN.EXE Primitive disk cache FC.EXE Finds differences between two files FDISK.COM Partitions disks FIND.EXE Searches for text within a file FORMAT.COM Formats disks GRAFTABL.COM Graphics mode extender for some antique video cards GRAPHICS.COM Allows 'print screen' using printers graphics mode GWBASIC.EXE "Gee Whiz" BASIC interperetor JOIN.EXE Attach a drive letter pointer to a directory name KEYB.COM Loads keyboard code page information LABEL.COM Changes disk volume label LINK.EXE Combines compiled OBJ files into an EXE file MODE.COM Configures 'device' operating modes MORE.COM Limits output stream to a one page at a time display NLSFUNC.EXE Loads 'country' specific code page information PRINT.COM Allows background printing PRINTER.SYS Sets printer code page information RAMDRIVE.SYS Allows system RAM to be used as a virtual disk drive RECOVER.COM Recovers data from bad disk sectors REPLACE.EXE Updates all instances of a file RESTORE.COM Extracts files from a 'backup' archive SELECT.COM Creates a code page information specific floppy disk SHARE.EXE File locking manager SORT.EXE Lists files in alphanumeric order SUBST.EXE Assigns to a subdirectory a logical drive letter SYS.COM Creates a bootable disk TREE.COM Lists drive contents in a 'tree' order XCOPY.EXE Copies files and directories (Code Page Information files) 4201.CPI -printer.sys 5202.CPI -printer.sys COUNTRY.SYS -nlsfunc EGA.CPI -display.sys KEYBOARD.SYS -keyb LCD.CPI -display.sys ===== Note: Although for completeness I have included "IO.SYS" and "MSDOS.SYS" in this utility package (as well as "command.com"), you can -not- boot a computer into DOS using these files unless they are specially placed on your bootup disk.
